Baldwin mayoral race centers on experience versus a new approach

BALDWIN — In the small town of Baldwin, where fewer than 2,000 people call home, the race for mayor comes down to a choice between building on the town’s recent progress and taking a new approach to its future.

Incumbent Mayor Clarence Vappie is seeking to continue his leadership, drawing on 32 years of experience on the town’s Board of Aldermen. Challenger Ajani Connor, who has served as an alderman for the past four years, says he offers a younger perspective and believes residents should see improvements happening now, not just hear about projects planned for the future.

Vappie points to millions of dollars in grant funding and allocations he says are lined up for upcoming projects, arguing the town has made significant progress during his administration.

"Along with the approval of the council, I have about anywhere from seven to ten million dollars worth of grants and allocations that construction will probably start next year, even some the year after," Vappie said.

He also highlighted recent developments, including work at the police station, a new children’s park and improvements to the town’s boat landing.

“But I think in the past four years we’ve gotten quite a bit accomplished,” Vappie said. “Just yesterday, we had a groundbreaking repair of the police station, for a new kiddie park, and the ribbon cutting on the revised boat landing.”

Connor, however, says securing funding for future projects is only part of the equation. He believes the town must also focus on addressing residents’ needs in the present.

“Simply telling a resident that, hey, we have a grant that’s coming in a few years to fix that isn’t enough,” Connor said. “There are things we can do to continue those investments in infrastructure and make those changes presently.”

Connor also emphasized public safety as a priority, calling it the foundation of a strong community.

“Continuing to invest in public safety — public safety is the heartbeat of our community,” he said.

Vappie shared similar beliefs about public safety.

Both candidates say they want to move Baldwin forward, but they offer different perspectives on how to get there. Vappie is emphasizing his experience and the investments he says are already in motion, while Connor is calling for a more immediate approach to infrastructure improvements.

Ultimately, Baldwin voters will decide which candidate’s vision best reflects their priorities for the town’s future.
