PRAIRIEVILLE - One person died in the hospital after a four-vehicle crash along I-10 eastbound near Bluff Road on Wednesday.

The interstate was blocked for several hours as fire officials worked to free people trapped in the fiery wreckage.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said that the shutdown resulted from "a multi-vehicle accident with one vehicle on fire." Emergency officials say that four vehicles are involved, with two people taken to the hospital. One of these people later died, but the other is still in critical condition.

The Prairieville Fire Department responded to the crash, with St. George fire officials assisting. Three ambulances were on the scene after the crash happened.
