A first look at multi-million-dollar changes coming to Plank Road
BATON ROUGE- The future of Plank Road looks vastly different from its current state.
Recently, Councilman Darryl Hurst released his renderings for the $20 million Delmont Economic Development Project. It was just approved by the Metro Council last week. Now, we’re getting a look at how the money will be used. It will change the look of major intersection street signs and renovate the exterior of existing buildings.
"This is going to be a master project; it is the first step into making the changes that we want to see in north Baton Rouge. With job opportunities comes workforce development, education, change in household median incomes, change in our community,” Hurst said.
The overall plan is called "Revive Plank Road." The project will focus specifically on Plank Road between Evangeline and Airline Highway. It will go towards signage, facade, lighting and landscaping.
"The goal is to bring in eateries, the goal is to bring in retail, grocery stores so that this becomes a walking community for the people who live around here because some of them don't have cars. We're creating the ability for them to get jobs two to three minutes from their homes,” Hurst said
The project will be funded with an additional two pennies on a sales tax.

"So we'll have somewhere around 17 to 20 million dollars in hand to work on all the projects at one time. And then pay it over the life cycle of the economic development district, which is a ten-year period,” Hurst added.
