DENHAM SPRINGS - The EPA said displaced oil containers discharged between 300 and 600 gallons of unused motor oil into a neighborhood during the August 2016 flood event.

The information comes after a federal inquiry into complaints from neighbors who live around Lard Oil Company on Florida Avenue in Denham Springs. Both federal and state environmental experts surveyed the area after the flood.

Wednesday, 2 On Your Side learned, the EPA found the yards of 51 homes, a house and a business sustained residual oil staining from the discharge of oil. The EPA reported the substance as 10w40 motor oil. The affected area was with-in two or three blocks of the oil facility located at 914 Florida.

"It appears to be a localized incident and predominately lubricating oil," the EPA wrote.

Lard Oil said it started working with its neighbors, cleaning up homes immediately. A company representative said Lard Oil has a number of people working in the area around the facility. The company said its updated safety and containment measures were able to subdue any other release.

It is estimated as much as two feet of water surged through the area in August.

DEQ, the state's environmental bureau, said the "incident is still under investigation."
