BATON ROUGE - Former Baton Rouge Kingfish player and coach Cam Brown died over the weekend in a motorcycle crash in Blue Ridge, Georgia, according to media reports. He was 56.

Brown, who played for the Kingfish from 1996 to 2002, led the team as a coach during the 2002-2003 season.

He also went on to play for the Gwinnett Gladiators in 2003, where he spent the final three seasons of his career. His jersey is currently one of only three retired by the team.

"He played. He coached. He helped put the ECHL where it is today. He's an honest hockey player. He came in and worked hard, helped the community out and raised his family,” ECHL Hall of Famer Pat Kelly told the Daily Post in 2010.

Brown retired as the ECHL all-time leader and ranked second with 780 regular-season games played over the course of 16 seasons, according to the ECHL website. He also played one game in the NHL as a rookie with the Vancouver Canucks.
