2 Your Town Denham Springs: Mighty Moms take up Mahjong, raising money for kids in need
DENHAM SPRINGS - Mahjong has made a major comeback, and in Denham Springs, the Mighty Moms are leading the way.
Dawn Birdsong runs Mahj in the City, a group of mahjong enthusiasts.
"It's just been fun," Birdsong said. "Everyone in our group plays mahjong for a different reason."
Mahjong is an ancient game similar to Gin. In the American version of the game, the card that says what tiles are needed to win changes every year. Birdsong says the changing rules challenge players and level the playing field.
"You're trying to collect a line of tiles that match one of the lines here on the card," Jennifer Doughty said.
In addition to playing Mahjong together, the group also gives back to their community. For 15 years, Mighty Moms has raised money for hungry kids in Livingston Parish.

"We started a long time ago, and we're still going," Birdsong said. "It's something we can easily fix. We can buy extra Easy-Mac or buy extra granola bars."
