BATON ROUGE — Less than 24 hours after news broke that LSU received a cease-and-desist letter from the representation of former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels, Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin was asked about the situation Thursday.

Kiffin declined to provide any additional comment, referring back to remarks he made last week. 

"I commented a week ago on that, and so that is the comment that I had, and we are moving forward."

Kiffin's previous comments came after LSU cornerback DJ Pickett began wearing No. 5, the same number Daniels wore during his Heisman-winning 2023 season with the Tigers.

At last week's press conference, Kiffin said he had researched the situation with Daniels' family and representatives and believed Pickett was promised the number during his recruitment.

"That was a situation that was promised to him in recruiting here for him to sign here. And I've done a lot of research on that with the family and the representatives and people. And so, really, I didn't have a decision to make. It was promised to the kid," Kiffin said. "I'm not going to judge something that I wasn't here for. But when a kid's promised something to come to school, he should wear it. And so at that point, I don't really think that's my decision. You know, he should be honored with what he was told."

Kiffin was also asked Thursday how he would handle a hypothetical situation in which a player requested to wear No. 9, the number Joe Burrow wore during LSU's undefeated 2019 season, when he won the Heisman Trophy and led the Tigers to a national championship.

No LSU player has worn No. 9 since Burrow's final season in Baton Rouge.

Kiffin declined to weigh in on that situation as well.

"Yeah, I'm not going to get into that. There's a lot to numbers and whether they're retired, whether they're not, and different versions, and so I don't have an answer."

According to ESPN, a letter was sent to LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry on Aug. 5 from Daniels' representation. The letter reportedly stated that LSU could no longer use Daniels' name, image and likeness.

The report also said that Daniels' representatives believe LSU has treated him differently than Burrow, particularly regarding the handling of their respective jersey numbers.

Daniels played at LSU from 2022-23 and won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 after throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns while rushing for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was selected No. 2 overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2024 NFL Draft.
