BATON ROUGE - There's still plenty of work to be done in Louisiana after historic flooding destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. A large portion of that will be done by volunteers.

If you can spare the time, please consider the following volunteer opportunities this weekend.

LOOKING TO GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY?

• SAMARITAN’S PURSE
  • Samaritan’s Purse is accepting volunteers to assist with debris removal and mudouts until Oct. 29.
  • Volunteers can register online as a day volunteer or fill out a waive at the base location. All volunteers are required to attend a volunteer orientation/safety briefing for their first time volunteering.
• UNITED WAY OF ACADIANA
  • Volunteers are being placed in Lafayette and St. Landry Parishes through the United Way of Acadiana Volunteer Center. Opportunities are available for warehouse volunteers until Sept. 6 and indefinitely for volunteers to help remove debris from homes and neighborhoods.

• UNITED SAINTS RECOVERY PROJECT
  • The United Saints Recovery Project is accepting volunteers to gut flooded homes. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Individuals are welcome, groups are encouraged. Housing is available for out-of-town volunteers.

• HELP CLEAN OUT HOUSES IN ASCENSION PARISH
  • The Volunteer Reception Center in the Lamar Dixon Expo Center is open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers interested in mucking and gutting houses can register in person and be assigned immediately.                                 9039 South St. Landry Avenue, Gonzales, La. 70737
• REACH OUT WORLDWIDE
  • Reach out Worldwide is looking for 10-to-15 volunteers daily to help much out and gut flooded homes. All tools will be provided. Crews depart the Eastside Elementary School at 7:30 a.m. each morning.

• NECHAMA
  • NECHAMA is recruiting volunteers to gut and muck houses in the Baton Rouge area.

• EVACUTEERS
  • The Evacuteers are working with Trinity Lutheran Church in Baton Rouge to help muck and gut homes in the area. All volunteers must be able to lift more than 40 lbs.
  • If you are available to help, please fill out this Google form and the Evacuteers will reach out to you with an assignment. 

CAN YOU COOK?

• OPERATION BBQ RELIEF
  • Operation BBQ Relief needs volunteers Tuesday through Friday in Hammond to help serve 100k meals each week. Volunteers must be 16-and-up and all volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian.
  • Volunteer nurses and medical students are welcome as well for heat-related care.

SUPPORT THE SHELTERS        

• RED CROSS
  • Anyone wishing to volunteer for the Red Cross can register atRedCross.org/Louisiana or call 855-489-2528.
• CATHOLIC CHARITIES
  • Catholic Charities is receiving donations daily to be distributed to those affected by the flood. Anyone who can help distribute these donations should visit their website.
  • Additionally, Catolic Charities is in need of shelter volunteers. For more information, visit their website here.
• LICENSED MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS
  • If you are a medical professional, register at www.DHH.LAVA.gov in order to have malpractice insurance as a volunteer.

HAVE A SPECIAL CONNECTION WITH ANIMALS?

• THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF LOUISIANA NEEDS DRIVERS
  • The Humane Society of Louisiana is looking for volunteer transport drivers with trucks and vans to help transport supplies and animals around the region.

• SEVERAL ANIMALS NEED FOREVER AND FOSTER HOMES
  • Adoptable animals from several parishes were transported to The Louisiana SPCA for adoption during the flood.
