CENTRAL - Election Day is months away, but we already know Central will have a new mayor soon and possibly a new police chief.

Four candidates qualified for mayor. Three candidates, including the incumbent, are running for police chief.

Current Chief Roger Corcoran seeks a third term, pointing to his four decades in law enforcement. He wants to continue to build on the work already underway at the Central Police Department.

"I'll continue to do what we're doing. I'm going to continue moving this department forward," said Corcoran.

One opponent, retired federal agent Paul Kimball, said he wants to build stronger relationships with residents. He believes this is a key to successful public safety.

"I think the community is our strongest law enforcement tool. Building relationships with citizens, and I want to pour into the citizens," said Kimball.

The third candidate for Central Police: Larry "Lew" Walters, Jr. With nearly three decades of law enforcement experience in the capital area, Walters said his goal, if he wins, will be to build up the police force.

"Build a strong structure for the department to grow. The growth has not been as Central has grown," said Walters, Jr.

In the race for mayor, four candidates will be on the ballot.

Businessman Geno Guercio said his priorities include infrastructure, supporting local businesses, and education.

"Education is the answer to just about any problem. So we want to keep the schools high performing," said Guercio. 

Another candidate, Lon Vicknair, is the Chief of Staff for East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards. He took a leave of absence from that job while he runs for mayor.

Vicknair, who is endorsed by the Republican Party of Louisiana, said his campaign will focus on his Christian faith, improving infrastructure, keeping crime rates low, and responsible growth.

"Keep Central where Central is but also be able to evolve and make responsible growth in Central," said Vicknair.

Current Central Councilwoman, Despo "D'Ann" Wells is also in the running. Her platform includes infrastructure improvements and keeping Central a small town while focusing on economic development.

"I've been sitting on the City of Central Council, and I think that is what honestly separates me from any other candidate," said Wells.

Current EBR Metro Councilman Aaron Moak rounds out the field in the race for mayor. Moak previously served on Central's City Council and said he is committed to the community.

WBRZ called Moak, asking for an interview about his campaign but did not hear back.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. Runoffs are Saturday, December 12 if needed.
