BATON ROUGE - Amazon's drone delivery service has been operating in Baton Rouge for two months, and residents in some neighborhoods are raising concerns about noise and safety.

The service has federal approval to launch as many as 1,000 flights a day. Residents living near Amazon's Cortana Place Fulfillment Center said they see dozens of drones flying above their homes every day. Some describe the sound as a buzz or a vacuum noise.

"It's mildly annoying. Midday, like around 10 a.m., you'll hear them," said Fred Simonson, a homeowner in the area.

A new video has added to the safety concerns. It shows an Amazon delivery drone sitting in a median on Florida Boulevard near Monterrey Drive.

Some residents worry that the 80-pound drone landing in the median of a busy roadway could have been a serious safety issue for passing motorists.

"A big hazard. It could've done a lot of damage. It could have killed someone," one resident said.

Some residents, like King Alexander, welcome the drones.

"I've enjoyed seeing them. I believe it gives our area a sense of futuristic operation," Alexander said.

Amazon spokesperson Jack Stelzner addressed the median landing, explaining it as a controlled safety procedure.

"When something unexpected happens, Prime Air drones perform a Safe Contingent Landing, which is a proactive, controlled procedure used in the rare instances when a drone determines it is safer to land than to return to base," Stelzner said in statement.

Stelzner also said the company has cut drone noise by 50 percent and that sound heard on the ground is minimal and short-lived.
