City-parish officials making 'major announcement' about future of River Center, downtown Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE — After postponing a news conference intending to make a "major announcement," city-parish officials will be unveiling new plans for the Raising Cane's River Center and the surrounding areas in downtown Baton Rouge on Monday.
Mayor-President Sid Edwards and other officials are scheduled to announce the new plans for the area at 11:30 a.m.
Last week, a pair of proposals to redevelop the River Center were introduced at Metro Council.
The first proposal would authorize Mayor-President Edwards to execute a memorandum of understanding between the city-parish and its tourism agency Visit Baton Rouge. The MOU would establish the framework and guidance for Visit Baton Rouge to serve as the interim manager of River Center facilities.
The appointment aims to fill a critical operational gap until a long-term developer is selected for the venue’s multi-million-dollar expansion and downtown hotel project.
Edwards is also looking to execute a professional services agreement with former local tourism executive Butch Spyridon, through his Total BS LLC, for professional consulting services in connection with the River Center redevelopment project. Spyridon spent 30 years at the helm of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp., and before that, worked with the formerly named Baton Rouge Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
