DENHAM SPRINGS — A crossing guard died after being struck by a vehicle at a Denham Springs elementary school on Thursday afternoon, according to authorities. 

Crossing guard Katy Wells was killed after being hit by a car outside Gray's Creek Elementary, according to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office. 

"This is a devastating loss for our community. She was loved. She was more than a crossing guard. She took great pride in protecting our children," Sheriff Jason Ard said, offering prayers to Wells' family.
