LSP: Man with suspended license arrested, ran away from crash that killed 3 horses
BATON ROUGE - A man who allegedly caused an Ascension Parish crash that killed three horses and ran away from the scene turned himself in on Tuesday.
State Police said 43-year-old Carlo Phillips of Donaldsonville was arrested in the wreck, which happened along La. Highway 70 at the Sunshine Bridge on Oct. 24.
WBRZ spoke with Situated Riderz, a trail riding group that was heading back from Napoleonville with four horses in its trailer when they were hit on the bridge.
"I don't see lights or anything behind me, then boom," Situated Riderz Founder Anthony Carter said. "We see one horse about ten feet away, by a car, stuck under a car. The gate of the trailer just flew open."
Three of the horses were killed on the bridge. Michael Parker, a passenger and owner of one of the horses, said he saw the other driver get out of his vehicle and take off.
"We seen somebody running, got out the car and ran, left us with two, three dead horses," Parker said.
