ALL CLEAR — the threat of strong to severe thunderstorms has ended for the Capital Area. Even so, there are more storm chances in the forecast, offering a cooldown every now and then.

Tonight & Tomorrow: Following a round of afternoon thunderstorms, cloud cover will linger into the evening along with a handful of showers. Expect clearing skies overnight, though any leftover clouds by dawn might wring out an early-morning sprinkle. Lows will settle in the mid-70s. An isolated shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out as the day wears on, but there will be lots of dry time. As highs reach the mid-90s, the heat index could flirt with 108°, though it may stay just below the mark needed for an official Heat Advisory.

Up Next: Wednesday will feel like a classic summer day, with morning sun quickly driving up temperatures before scattered afternoon storms move in to cool things down. By Thursday, an upper-level disturbance glides into the region, squeezing out an even greater storm coverage in the process. The daily storm coverage will begin to taper toward next weekend, allowing for a return of the routine summer setup. All told over the next week, most will collect an additional inch or two of rainfall over the next week, with localized areas pushing 3”.

The Tropics: Satellite information indicates that a low-level circulation remains in association with an area of low pressure a few hundred miles east of Bermuda. Conditions are just barely conducive to further development. A short-lived tropical depression or storm remains possible through Tuesday while continuing northward into the North Atlantic, steering clear of land. The overall chances of it happening are 50-50 at this point. By midweek, the development window closes as the system moves into colder waters.

Meanwhile, a tropical wave moved off the African Coast on Monday. While disorganized at this point, conditions will gradually become more favorable later this week. A tropical depression could form by mid-to-late week as the system continues west across the tropical Atlantic. This system does not appear to pose any threat to Louisiana.
