A typical August weather pattern continues across the Capital Region Saturday with highs in the mid 90s and heat index values around 100–105 degrees. Spotty to isolated thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon, and any slow-moving storms could produce brief heavy rain.

Today and Tonight: Saturday will be hot and humid, with afternoon temperatures reaching the low 90s. A few showers and thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon, but most of the Baton Rouge area will remain dry.

Storms will be very slow-moving, so where they do develop, locally heavy rain could lead to minor flooding in poorly drained or low-lying areas. Stronger storms could also produce frequent lightning and gusty winds, but severe weather is not expected.

Up Next: Storm coverage increases Sunday and Monday as Gulf moisture remains plentiful. Afternoon highs will stay in the low 90s, with heat index values around 100–105 degrees.

The slow-moving nature of the storms means a few locations could pick up heavy rain while others nearby remain dry. Next week stays very summer-like, with isolated to scattered afternoon storms and temperatures in the 90s. Very hot weather returns late in the week.

Tropics: The Atlantic is showing some signs of waking up as we head deeper into August, with several tropical waves now moving westward across the basin. One wave near the Cape Verde Islands has the most notable thunderstorm activity, while another wave is approaching the Lesser Antilles, but the National Hurricane Center says tropical cyclone development is not expected over the next seven days.
