LORANGER — Tangipahoa deputies arrested a Loranger Elementary School employee for allegedly slapping a special-needs student on Thursday.

School administrators were alerted Thursday morning that paraprofessional Jeniell Barze, 55, had allegedly slapped a 10-year-old student, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said. 

The incident was caught on surveillance footage, according to the sheriff's office, and a TPSO school resource officer removed Barze from campus. The student was assessed for injuries by school medical staff.

Barze was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on a cruelty to a juvenile charge.
