BATON ROUGE - For the third time in three years, Louisiana lawmakers are proposing the addition of another sign to college and high school campuses, this time to help women locate resources during pregnancy.

If passed, this bill by State Sen. Heather Cloud, R-Ville Platte, would require schools to put up signs in health centers. The legislation follows previously passed requirements that require signs with the motto "In God We Trust" and the Ten Commandments.

College students say they're not sure the signs will have the intended effect.

The signs would say: "Pregnant? Help is Available for You and Your Baby!"

Louisiana's Department of Health and an unspecified non-profit would pay for and provide the signs.

Resident Tara Wicker supports the bill, saying she believes it would help women get through pregnancy, and she supports the information being physically printed out and displayed.

"When you're in those situations, a lot of times you can feel very, very isolated," Wicker said.

Another resident, Kaitlyn Joshua, has a different perspective. Years ago, when she was eleven weeks pregnant, she had a miscarriage. Joshua says state law got in the way of her getting help, as area hospitals were unable to assist her due to restrictions on abortion-related care.

"This is not something I can get behind," Joshua said.

Joshua says she also worries that requiring another sign on a wall isn't the best way to reach students in need of resources, and she wants to make sure any information provided under the new law comes from organizations without bias.
