BATON ROUGE — Gov. Jeff Landry and Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple announced a $100 million investment in the Fortified Roof Program.

The investment combines redirected funds from federal disaster recovery resources, remaining Hurricane Katrina and Rita bonds and legislative appropriations.

The funding breaks down into three parts. Twenty million dollars in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development money will go toward homeowners specifically on the coast. Temple found $50 million in leftover Katrina bond money that he is reallocating. The Legislature appropriated $30 million to the project this year.

"Louisiana's insurance market is improving. More insurers are coming to the state, competitions increasing and rates are stabilizing," Landry said. "Our goal is to reduce the financial barriers for families seeking to fortify their homes and overall lower premiums."

According to the Louisiana Department of Insurance, the lottery to get a roof is currently closed. To sign up for updates on when it will open, click here.
